Jean-Claude Van Damme and Volvo make one of this year’s best commercials with ‘the most epic of splits’

Before I talk about how awesome Jean-Claude Van Damme is, check out this recent Volvo commercial featuring the famed action movie hero:

Now, I can assure you this video is real (you can watch the full making-of video here). If he were to have slipped, he would not have fallen to the road below, as there were safety wires to prevent that. There were also small platforms placed where his feet were for better positioning.

But, all buzz-killing aside, that is 53 year-old Jean-Claude-freakin’ Van Damme doing a split between two huge (and moving) Volvo trucks!

As stated in the video, the commercial was “set up to demonstrate the stability and precision of Volvo Dynamic Steering.” Van Damme’s monologue perfectly described not only his own life, but the Volvo brand:

“I’ve had my ups and downs, my fair share of bumpy roads and heavy winds. That’s what made me what I am today.”

“What you see before you is a body crafted to perfection. A pair of legs engineered to defy the laws of physics, and a mindset to master the most epic of splits.”

JCVD has already done some pretty ‘epic’ splits before as well

Volvo does not have much of a stronghold in the US in terms of advertising or brand-name recognition, so this commercial could really do wonders in making people in the US more aware of the Volvo brand. For a sleek, European brand such as Volvo, I think it was a great call having the sleek, European action star in their commercial.

Van Damme starred in many great late-80’s and early-90’s action films such as Blood Sport, Time Cop, and Double Impact, where he for some reason played both the good guy and bad guy.

After his fame waned, he became sort of a caricature of himself, mostly doing is famous splits for comedic purposes.

So, as you can see, Jean-Claude Van Damme as made quite the name for himself for his splitting prowess, and almost has a Chuck Norris-esque cult following.

All told, Van Damme was the perfect person to portray Volvo in their newest commercial. And hey, if it can lead to a new generation of people to watch Blood Sport for any reason, I’m all for it!

And last but not least, I’ll finish with this:
